| Artist Statement |
| Abstract - I am influenced by the colors, textures and patterns of the natural world, the power and beauty of traditional African Textiles and the spirit of improvisation and play found at the heart of African-American creativity. My artistic approach is one of improvisation, much like the idiosyncratic rifts in jazz music. I often begin with a theme or concept inspired by a cultural or spiritual experience. I use fabrics from all over the world because I want as many cultures as possible represented in my work. The cloth conveys my sense of how the cultures of the world can be woven into patterns that are both harmonious and usettling. My improvisationally arranged fabrics express my sense of motion and color; I delight in new and unexpected combinations. |
