The exhibition will be open Jul 29 - Aug 25, 2005. Voegtle's work shown at the Woman Made Gallery is a Silk Painted Scroll with the title "Ice World", a landscape piece about the arctic region which seemingly is a deadly world with temperatures below 60°C during winter. But this landscape is beautiful in its purity. When snow has been under enormous pressure for quite some time it turns into clear ice that appears to emanate light in all shades of blue, from light turquoise to nearly black. "Ice World" tries to convey these shades of ethereal blues. Voegtle who signs her work always with "Vyala" which is an old sanskrit word, feels deeply influenced by Asian cultures due to many travels to southeast Asian countries. A vyala is a mythical catlike animal that can have different faces. The vyala motif is ubiquitous in medieval Indian temples. Symbolically it represents the struggle to subdue the passions. The vyala's body is always a rampant lion sometimes engaged in some combat with a warrior or female trying to tame it. A symbol for the struggle of life and a symbol for the conflict within.
