September 13, 2002 marks the beginning of Julia Friedman Gallery's fall season, as the Gallery continues to present important exhibitions featuring local, national and international contemporary artists. We are pleased to announce the solo exhibitions for artists, Sergio Vega, opening September 13, followed by Brígida Baltar, opening October 25. In addition, the Gallery presents the US premiere of EN/OF, opening December 13. EN/OF includes limited edition works by established contemporary artists such as; Olafur Eliasson, Carsten Höller, Simon Starling, Sarah Morris, Liam Gillick, Tobias Rehberger, amongst others.

Sergio Vega's solo exhibition, Modernismo Tropical, September 13 - October 19, is inspired by the 17th century theory by Antonio de Leon Pinelo, which placed the Garden of Eden in South America. Vega traveled to Brazil in search of Pinelo’s legendary Paradise, however what he encountered was present day Brazil. Modernismo Tropical incorporates photography, architectural models, sound and text into an overall design: that of a modernist paradise. The artist received an MFA from Yale University, attended the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program and has exhibited at; PS 1, New York; The Biennale of Lyon, France; SITE Santa Fe, New Mexico; Basque Museum of Contemporary Art, Spain; and Yokohama Triennale, Japan, amongst others.

Following is the US premiere solo exhibition by artist, Brígida Baltar, entitled, Bee House, October 25 - December 7. This exhibition features recent photographs and drawings, which reflect the artist's interest in performance, fashion, and open narratives. Baltar most recently exhibited at the 25th São Paulo Biennale and will be featured in a solo exhibition at the Cleveland Contemporary Art Center in December, 2002.

EN/OF, opening December 13, includes art editions (photography, print, drawing, or flat object) by an internationally known visual artist paired with a 12" record with exclusive tracks from a musician working in the field of experimental music. Each edition is limited to 100 signed and numbered copies. First released in January 2002, EN/OF editions have most recently been shown at Manifesta 4, Frankfurt, as well as in exhibitions in Cologne, Vienna, Duesseldorf, Geneva and Berlin.
