Laurie Vaughn's painting entitled, "Can You Hear Me Now?" has been selected for inclusion in the Artists For Human Rights fine art show, at the James Gray Gallery, Bergamot Station, Santa Monica, November 14-24, 2007, Reception November 17, 2007, 6-9 pm hosted by Academy Award Nominee Actress Anne Archer.
Laurie Vaughn's piece will be featured alongside paintings, sculptures, and multimedia presentations by thirty-two international artists each reflecting some aspect of the thirty points of the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Film-maker Taron Lexton presents a series of 30 public service announcements on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights "intended to give the viewer an intense aesthetic and emotional education on the subject".
Childhood memories of "Minette's grandmother", standing at The Monument Bus Stop, almost any afternoon, about 4 o'clock, provided the inspiration for my interpretation of article 19, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Waving her Bible, from her street corner podium...she'd be preachin' her heart out...her shrill voice, screaming ini fits of holy ecstasy...bemoaning the wickedness of the present day....just in time to meet the commuters, returning home from work.
Some people were embarrassed,. so they shunned her, and tried to sneak past her, unnoticed. However, she always railed into them, especially hard, as they represented the object of her disconcertion. Naturally, as kids, we'd fall out laughing. We loved her very much.
"I was inspired to paint this depiction representing 'the right to freedom of opinion and expression, as it pertains to religion. It seemed relevant, in light of the global conflicts, attributed to intolerance for this basic human right."
