The Camera
The JavaCam allows you to view a scene via the the camera's viewfinder and lets you take a
picture. You have control over the exposure by adjusting the camera's shutter speed and
lens aperture controls (in manual mode). Alternately, you could set the camera to one of
its auto modes (shutter priority or aperture priority) and see how the camera sets the
exposure. Once you expose the scene, the picture will be processed (assuming
"normal" processing) and displayed in another window.(You could view the black
and white print or the negative). I am hoping that this applet could be used teach the
basic concepts of photography i.e. camera, meter and the zone system. I am looking for
some tutorial/text with photographs to put in my web page with this applet(Want to
contribute ?).
Instructions
-
Image Selector: Use this control to select a Image. This image will appear in the
camera's viewfinder. Depending on your network connection, the loading times for images
vary. Currently, the images are not cached within the applet. Most of the camera controls
are disabled when a image is being loaded.
-
Film Speed Control: This control lets you choose the film speed from ISO 3 to ISO
3200. The film is always Black and White, even if the image you see is in color.
-
Shutter Control: This control lets you choose the shutter speed from 1/4000 sec
to 1 sec in 1/2 stop intervals. The Shutter speed control is available only in the Shutter
Priority (Tv) or Metered Manual (MAN) mode.
-
(Note: This applet does not simulate camera-shake etc.)
-
Aperture Control: This control lets you choose the lens apeture from f1.0 to f32
in 1/3 stop intervals. The Aperture control is available only in the Aperture Priority
(Av) or Metered Manual(MAN) mode.
-
(Note: This applet does not simulate the depth of field)
-
Exposure Compensator: You can manually compensate your exposure upto + or - 3.0
EV.
-
LCD Display: This display shows the name of the currently selected image, user
selected shutter and f-stop, film speed(ISO) and exposure compensation.
-
Camera Mode Selector: Camera mode buttons lets you choose the camera operation
mode. They are Av (Aperture priority), Tv (Shutter priority) and MAN (Metered Manual). In
Av mode, the user selects the lens aperture and the camera will set the shutter speed
accordingly. In Tv mode, the shutter speed is set by the user and the camera will set the
lens aperture. The user can set both, the lens aperture and shutter speed in the metered
manual (MAN) mode. The meter index in the viewfinder display shows EV index. If the scene
you are viewing is beyond the capability of the meter, a "out of range" error
message will be displayed below the metering index.
-
Metering Mode Selector: The available Metering modes are Center weighted and Spot
metering (approx 2%). To choose the metering mode, press [CEN] button for Center Weighted
and [SPOT] button for spot metering. To read in a spot meter, just press the Spot meter
button, and use the mouse to point and click anywhere on the image. If you need to look at
the metering patterns used in this applet, click here for Center
Weighted and here
for Spot metering pattern. Presently, the patterns are hard-coded into the applet. A
future version of this appet may allow the user to define the metering pattern. (Its a
weighted grid).
-
Negative Selector: If you need a negative (instead of the postive print), press
the NEG button before you expose. Press this button again to view positives again.
-
Shutter Release: To take a photograph, just press the Expose button (shutter
release). A frame will popup showing the print (or negative) of photograph you took
(assuming Normal processing). Note that the Expose button is disabled until a image is
loaded. That is, first you must load a image by selecting one in the image list. Once you
select an image, the applet will then load the image from the server. Once the image is
loaded, the Expose button is enabled.
